Trichy: A disturbing incident occurred on Thursday morning at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Government Hospital in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, when a rat bit a 65-year-old female patient admitted for treatment. The incident caused a stir among the hospital administration, and the woman was immediately provided with additional medical care. This event has once again raised serious questions regarding hygiene, infection control, and patient safety measures in government hospitals.
According to reports, Tamilkodi (65), wife of Rathinam and a resident of the Ponmalaipatti area in Trichy, had sustained severe injuries after a fall at home on July 10. She suffered a leg fracture in the accident, prompting her family to admit her to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Trichy for treatment. Following an examination, doctors decided to perform surgery, and a successful operation on her leg was conducted on July 20.
Post-surgery, Tamilkodi was recuperating in the hospital ward under medical supervision. On Thursday morning, while she was resting in her bed, a rat suddenly approached her and bit her. Her scream of pain drew the attention of other patients and their relatives present in the ward. Hospital staff were immediately informed.
Medical personnel rushed to the scene and administered first aid to the woman. Considering the risk of infection, doctors provided necessary medication and began closely monitoring her condition. Hospital sources state that the woman’s condition is currently stable; she has been placed under special medical observation as a precaution to prevent any potential infection.

Health experts note that patients’ immunity can be relatively compromised after surgery; consequently, a rat bite significantly increases the risk of infection.
