Double murder in Bhubaneswar: Six arrested, one of them consumed ‘dimiri’ fruit to kill self to avoid police action

Bhubaneswar: A total of six accused persons including a minor boy have been arrested by the Commissionerate Police for their involvement in two murder cases that occurred in two separate areas of Bhubaneswar on the day of Holi celebration yesterday. While addressing the media persons, Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena informed that there were no any major reasons or past enmity of the murder cases that took place at Shantipalli Basti under Shahidnagar Police Station limits and Mancheswar area during Holi celebration yesterday.
While speaking about the murder case of Shantipalli Basti, the DCP informed that a scuffle broke out between Gopi Guni on one side and Pinku Guni, Bana Guni and a minor boy on the other side while the Holi celebrations were going on in front of Gopi Guni’s house in Shantipalli Basti. Gopi used to work as an iron rod binding labour.
There was some physical altercation between the two parties which culminated into Bana Guni stabbing the victim Gopi Guni, said the DCP adding that after this incident, the three accused fled from the scene of crime. Prima facie the incident took place under the influence of alcohol on sudden provocation.
Shahidnagar PS case no. 117/2025 dated 15.03.2025 u/s 103(1)/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered against the accused persons.
Meanwhile, Bana Guni and along with the minor boy have been apprehended while Pinku Guni is still at large. Bana Guni shall be forwarded to the honourable court u/s 103(1)/3(5) BNS and the minor shall be produced before the juvenile justice board, Meena informed.
Shahidnagar PS case number 533/2024, U/S 126(2)/296/351(2)/118(1)/109/74/308(4)/3(5) of the BNS were filed against Bana Guni and Shahidnagar PS case number 158/2017, u/s 323/324/326/336/341/427/34 of IPC were registered against Pinku Guni.
The Bhubaneswar DCP also spoke about the Mancheswar murder case and informed that four accused persons namely Milu alias Tanmay Behera, Lulu alias Padmanav Behera and Bulu alias Prashant Behera of Begunia, and Samir Kumar Swain of Fuleswar Vihar in Bharatpur area have been arrested.
There was minor altercation of words between the accused Tanmay and deceased Ayushman Pati. This led to a heated argument between them, following which Milu stabbed Ayushman near Mancheswar Industrial Estate, in front of Punjab National Bank, the DCP said adding that after a call was received by 112 number, an ambulance had taken the victim to the Capital Hospital where doctor declared him received dead.
According to Jagmohan Meena, Tanmay Behera shall be forwarded to the honorable court for murder u/s 103(1) BNS while the rest three arrested persons shall be forwarded for harbouring the accused person U/s 103(1)/249(a)/3(5) of BNS.
Two are brothers of the accused Tanmay namely, Lulu and Bulu and third arrested person is a driver of Lulu namely Samir Kumar Swain. They helped him in providing shelter to him and assisting him in escaping from arrest.
Tanmay Behera was apprehended from Pipili area with the help of Pipili Police. Before apprehension by police, police received intelligence that he had consumed ‘dimiri fruit’ (fig fruit) as poison due to fear of arrest. He was under tracking. Police team was at about 10 kms away from the accused. Immediately, Bhubaneswar police team with Pipili Police (Puri) rushed to the location and rescued him. Then, he was taken to CHC, Mangalpur by police. He received treatment there and now, he has been discharged.
