Doraha: Government school students honoured for their excellent performance in studies and sports

Punjab: The Umeed Welfare Society honored students of Government Primary School and Government High School, Ghulal, with cash prizes for their outstanding performance in academics and sports. For the past four years, the society has been recognizing promising students from poor backgrounds to help them continue their studies. “One day, the villagers gathered and decided to collect money as per their means to help students who had dropped out due to financial constraints,” said Harpreet Singh Mangat, a member of the non-governmental organization (NGO). Society members Dr. Aman and Dr. Subhash said, “The joy we felt on their faces was enough to motivate us. We also received help from villagers who have moved abroad. So far, we have repainted a government school, provided computers for the students, and provided resources to help them adjust to urban living. Sarabjit Singh from Canada and Amandeep Singh from Denmark regularly send salaries to the primary school teachers arranged by the society.” At a recent event, Preet Mangat of the NGO said, “We believe that with our support, the children will be able to support their families.”
The students’ parents thanked the NGO. “The NGO is a great support for our children. Every year, toppers are awarded cash prizes so they can continue their studies the next year. Financially, we can’t afford to send our children to school, even though they’re bright. The society comes to our aid,” said Sukhwinder Kaur, mother of Amandeep Kaur, who topped the academics. Kulwinder Kaur, mother of Class IX student Harpreet Kaur, said the society’s support has been very helpful. “They’ve arranged for a teacher, and the children learn better with personal attention. We’re grateful to the society,” she said.
