Donations to Jagannath Temple to now be made online via ‘Samarpan’

Puri: In a significant move to provide modern and secure digital facilities to millions of Lord Jagannath’s devotees worldwide, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi launched the ‘Samarpan’ digital Hundi (donation) platform on Wednesday. Through this new system, devotees residing within the country and abroad will be able to make online donations to the Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri from anywhere in the world. This initiative is seen as a major step towards enhancing transparency, accountability, and digital services within the temple administration.
The digital platform was inaugurated during a special event held at the office of the Shri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) in Puri. Notably, the launch took place just before Lord Jagannath’s world-famous annual Rath Yatra, offering lakhs of devotees the opportunity to offer their reverence digitally during the festival.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi remarked that Lord Jagannath is the focal point of faith for millions of devotees, not just in Odisha but across the globe. Many devotees live abroad or in remote parts of the country and are unable to visit Puri for various reasons. The ‘Samarpan’ digital Hundi platform has been developed keeping the convenience of such devotees in mind. He stated that the system would enable devotees to make donations to the temple in a secure, transparent, and convenient manner.
The Chief Minister affirmed the state government’s commitment to modernizing religious institutions and promoting the use of digital technology. He expressed confidence that the platform would serve as a robust digital bridge between Lord Jagannath’s devotees worldwide and the temple administration. This initiative will not only simplify the donation process but also boost resources for the temple’s development activities.
Officials from the Shri Jagannath Temple Administration stated that the ‘Samarpan’ platform has been designed in compliance with state-of-the-art security standards. It features a secure online payment system, allowing devotees to donate according to their devotion without any concerns. All major digital payment modes have been integrated into the platform to facilitate users both within the country and overseas. A secure digital record of every donation will be maintained, ensuring complete transparency throughout the process. According to officials, devotees previously had to visit Puri in person or rely on other methods to make donations to the temple. However, with the implementation of the new digital system, any devotee will be able to make a donation within minutes from the comfort of their home using a mobile phone, computer, or other internet-enabled device. This will save time and resources, making the donation process easier and more reliable than before.
The temple administration believes that the ‘Samarpan’ platform will prove particularly useful for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and foreign devotees who hold deep faith in Lord Jagannath but are unable to visit Puri regularly. They will now be able to contribute to the temple’s service from anywhere, at any time.
Every year, lakhs of devotees flock to Puri for grand religious events like the Rath Yatra, during which the temple receives substantial donations. The launch of the digital Hundi (donation box) platform will benefit devotees who are unable to reach the temple due to crowds or other constraints. It will also reduce reliance on cash transactions and streamline the donation process.
Experts in religious affairs note that digital services are rapidly expanding across major temples in India. Facilities such as online Darshan, e-services, digital Prasad booking, and now the digital Hundi are connecting devotees to religious activities through modern technology. ‘Samarpan’ is a significant initiative in this direction, exemplifying the harmonious blend of tradition and technology.
The state government has clarified that transparency will be the top priority in the operation of the digital platform. Donation funds will be utilized in accordance with regulations for temple development, religious activities, devotee amenities, and other designated purposes, thereby further strengthening the trust of the devotees.
The launch of this new digital service just before the Rath Yatra is considered highly significant. It is expected that lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad will avail themselves of this facility to express their devotion to Lord Jagannath. ‘Samarpan’ will emerge not merely as an online donation platform, but as a powerful medium to connect faith with the global stage through modern technology. This initiative also strengthens the vision of Digital India and could prove to be a significant step towards expanding technology-based, transparent services in religious institutions.
