DMK will face serious consequences if the BJP changes its stance: MP Karti Chidambaram

Sivaganga: Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has made a significant political statement regarding the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). He claimed that if the BJP alters its current stance of opposition, the DMK could suffer the greatest setback. He further alleged that the BJP is employing a strategy to exert political pressure on the DMK and that discussions are underway between the two parties on certain crucial issues.

On Saturday, Karti Chidambaram, the MP for the Sivaganga Lok Sabha constituency, launched an anti-corruption signature campaign titled ‘Banjam Thaveer, Nenjam Nimir’ near the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Tirupattur, Sivaganga district. The campaign aims to raise public awareness against corruption and unite people in opposition to it. A large number of Congress workers and local citizens attended the event, signing the campaign petition to demonstrate their commitment to fighting corruption.

Following the event, Karti Chidambaram addressed a press conference at Gandhi Palace, where he openly shared his views on various issues concerning state and national politics. He noted that there are reports of the BJP exerting pressure on the DMK through various political and administrative channels. According to him, there is also talk of dialogue commencing between the two parties in this regard.

Karti Chidambaram claimed that these alleged discussions involve significant matters such as the proposed bill on the delimitation of constituencies and the Central Government’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ scheme. He stated that if the DMK reaches a consensus with the BJP or extends its support on these issues, it would have a profound impact on the state’s political landscape.

He remarked that the people of Tamil Nadu have consistently advocated for the protection of the state’s rights and the federal structure. Consequently, if any political party deviates from its stated position to support the Central Government’s proposals, the public will evaluate that decision. He added that if the BJP changes its stance of opposition or its political strategy, the consequences would not be favorable for the DMK. The Congress MP stated that the delimitation of constituencies is not merely a political issue but a sensitive matter linked to state representation. South Indian states have previously expressed their concerns regarding this issue. He argued that a redistribution of seats based on population could impact the parliamentary representation of southern states; therefore, a comprehensive discussion and consensus among all stakeholders are essential.

He also raised questions regarding the ‘One Nation, One Election’ concept. Karti Chidambaram remarked that before implementing such a system in a vast and diverse democracy like India, detailed consultations must be held with all political parties, states, and constitutional bodies. According to him, respecting the autonomy of states and the federal structure should be the top priority within a democratic system.

Speaking on the anti-corruption campaign, he emphasized that ensuring transparency and accountability in public life is the need of the hour. He stated that the fight against corruption is not the sole responsibility of political parties; rather, it can only be made effective through the participation of every citizen in society. A signature campaign has been launched with this very objective, aiming to encourage more people to join the movement.

During the event, Congress leaders also extended their support to the campaign, stating that the mass movement against corruption would be further expanded. They appealed to the public to come forward to uphold democratic values and advocate for a transparent governance system.

Karti Chidambaram’s statement has sparked a new round of discussion in Tamil Nadu politics. However, there has been no immediate official response from the BJP or the DMK regarding his claims. Political analysts believe that issues such as delimitation and ‘One Nation, One Election’ are likely to remain key topics in both national and Tamil Nadu politics in the near future.
