DMK alliance MPs in Lok Sabha allege Union Budget ignores Tamil Nadu’s interests

Delhi: MPs from the ruling coalition in Tamil Nadu, who participated in the budget debate in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, alleged that the Union Budget presented for the financial year 2026-27 ignored the interests of Tamil Nadu. The details are as follows:

T. Thirumavalavan (Viduthulai Siruthaigal, Chidambaram): This budget statement is against the backward people and misleads farmers and laborers. The Tamil Nadu government has refused to allocate ₹5,542 crore for the Samagra Shiksha Project and ₹3,100 crore for the Jal Jeevan Andolan, which the Tamil Nadu government had requested. Requests for the Coimbatore and Madurai Metro Rail projects and the airport in Hosur have been rejected. The central government has renamed the 100-day work plan and extended it to a 125-day work plan, and has changed the rules to such an extent that it cannot be implemented in Tamil Nadu. When Bihar elections came, more funds could have been allocated, keeping in mind the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Micro, small, and medium enterprises, which can generate employment, haven’t been properly funded. This trend will be detrimental to India’s growth.

Karthi P. Chidambaram (Congress, Sivaganga): The finance report is just a statement of words. It’s not being implemented. In the last budget, the Finance Minister announced that a Makhana Board would be established at a cost of approximately ₹100 crore. But not a single rupee has been spent yet. Where is that board? This is the state of all schemes. If we look at the schemes announced now, two years later, they are only on paper and have not been implemented.

Dr. Rani Sreekumar (DMK, Tenkasi): Although many schemes have been announced for Tamil Nadu, funds have not been allocated properly. The government announced in the budget that three All India Ayurveda Educational Institutes would be established. Meanwhile, work on the AIIMS Medical College in Madurai remains incomplete. This has led to students being unable to attend and pursue further studies. Meanwhile, other hospital colleges announced alongside this one have opened, and students have received admissions. Funding for the Saksham Anganwadi Poshan 2.0 scheme has also not been adequately increased.

P. Selvaraj, (Communist Party of India, Nagapattinam): The budget statement offers no solutions to immediate problems like hunger, poverty, and unemployment. No serious effort has been made to tax high-profit companies. The BJP’s announcements over the past 10 years about doubling farmers’ income are mere empty words. The legitimate demands of 500 million laborers have been completely ignored. He said the PM Kisan Fund should be increased, the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme should be reinstated, fishermen’s issues should be resolved through mutual consent, rail traffic should be increased in the Nagapattinam constituency, and all funds should be given to Tamil Nadu.

1.5-year-old girl suffers from muscular dystrophy – MP Urukkam should help the girl

Speaking during the budget debate, Nagapattinam Lok Sabha member P. Selvaraj made a heartfelt appeal to the Prime Minister, Union Finance Minister, and Health Minister, citing the need for a one-and-a-half-year-old girl living in a tribal village in his constituency suffering from muscular dystrophy. He requested the Prime Minister and ministers to help the girl by sourcing medication from the United States, as this would cost up to ₹9 crore.
