Dibang Hydel Project achieves major breakthrough in diversion tunnel in Arunachal

Arunachal Pradesh: The 2,880 MW Dibang Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh has achieved a major construction milestone with the successful daylighting of a diversion tunnel, officials said on February 18.

According to a statement issued in Itanagar, the successful completion of Diversion Tunnel-3 marks a significant step forward for this major hydropower project being developed by NHPC Limited.

The final blast for the successful completion of the tunnel was initiated by Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director (Projects), NHPC, on Tuesday. Officials said the success demonstrates the steady progress in essential construction activities and will facilitate river diversion, a crucial part of dam construction.

Daylighting the tunnel is considered a crucial phase in the overall implementation plan of the project, which is being developed on the Dibang River in the Lower Dibang Valley district. The project will have an installed capacity of 2,880 MW, generated by 12 240 MW units.

Upon completion, the project is expected to generate approximately 11,000 million units of electricity annually. In addition to generating electricity, it is also expected to help control floods and manage water storage in the region.

Officials further stated that the project will help control floods in the Brahmaputra River basin, strengthen flood control systems downstream, and enhance energy security in the northeastern region.
