Depression active in Bay of Bengal, heat wave continues in Tamil Nadu including Chennai

Tamil Nadu: A weather system formed in the Bay of Bengal coastal region is currently active as a depression, and according to the Meteorological Department, it could make landfall on the coast on Monday (July 6). The Chennai Meteorological Department has clarified that this system is unlikely to have any major impact on Tamil Nadu, and the situation in the state is expected to remain normal. The system weakened from a deep depression to a depression on Sunday morning, although its impact is being monitored for weather conditions in coastal areas.
According to the Meteorological Department, the system remained active in the northern Bay of Bengal, especially near the coastal areas of northern Odisha and West Bengal. Despite its weakening, weather changes are possible in the coastal and surrounding areas. Officials stated that the situation is being continuously monitored so that any potential changes can be assessed in a timely manner.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu experienced intense heat on Sunday, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit in six locations in the state, including Chennai. The highest temperature was recorded in Thondi, Ramanathapuram district, where the mercury reached 103.38 degrees Fahrenheit. Nagapattinam recorded 102.8 degrees Fahrenheit, Chennai Meenambakkam 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit, Chennai Nungambakkam 101.48 degrees Fahrenheit, Madurai Airport 101.12 degrees Fahrenheit, and Adhirampattinam 100.04 degrees Fahrenheit. These data indicate that intense heat and humidity prevailed during the day in many parts of the state.
The Meteorological Department stated that some instability has been observed in the low pressure area extending from South Gujarat to Kerala. Consequently, isolated light rain accompanied by strong winds is expected in the Western Ghats districts from Monday (July 6) to July 8. However, this rainfall will not be widespread and may be confined to a few areas only.
Light rain is also expected at some places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. According to the Meteorological Department, Chennai and surrounding areas may also receive light rain on Monday, which is expected to provide some relief from the heat, but no heavy rain warning has been issued.
According to experts, the depression in the Bay of Bengal may change direction at this time, but as its intensity has decreased, there is no possibility of any major storm or heavy rain. Nevertheless, vigilance is advised in coastal and coastal areas, as such systems can sometimes change direction and strength suddenly.
The Meteorological Department also stated that temperatures are not expected to drop significantly in the coming days, as the effects of heat will still persist in many areas. However, light rain in the Western Ghats and coastal areas may provide some relief locally.
Overall, in the current situation, while the weather system in the Bay of Bengal has weakened and turned into a depression, the effects of severe heat continue in many parts of Tamil Nadu. The Meteorological Department is continuously monitoring the situation and updates will be issued in case of any change.
