Delhi High Court directs thug Chandrashekhar to hear his side on ‘punishment ticket’

New Delhi (IANS) | The Delhi High Court on Friday asked Mandoli Jail authorities to hear con man Chandrashekhar, arrested in a Rs 200-crore forgery and money laundering case, on the ‘punishment ticket’ of depriving him of canteen facilities for 15 days. A counsel for the Delhi government told the court that the second sentence of denial of visitation to Chandrashekhar would be decided afresh after hearing him.

Dismissing the plea of the accused, Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma said, “Without going into the issue of major and minor sentence, and especially considering that the matter is still pending before the Supreme Court, hearing the matter of sentence No. 1 (withholding of canteen facility) should be given a chance.

Thug Chandrashekhar is in Mandoli jail of the national capital.

The High Court had on Wednesday issued notice on Chandrashekhar’s plea against the sentence awarded by the jail authorities.

As per the orders of the jail authorities, he has been banned from meeting anyone, making telephone calls and using the canteen facility from May 1 to May 15.

In the petition, Chandrasekhar had said that the order issued by the Deputy Superintendent of Mandoli Jail on April 17 be set aside as both the ‘punishment tickets’ were issued without his knowledge.

Justice Sharma had sent a notice to the jail authorities on the petition.

Advocate Anant Malik, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that the principle of natural justice has been violated. This is a serious issue as the family of the petitioner’s mother resides in Bangalore.

Malik said that this issue should be heard without delay and the sentence should be postponed.

It was said in the petition that the Deputy Superintendent of the Jail had imposed a wrong sentence without any application of mind.

The petitioner stated that these facilities are the only way for him to communicate with his old mother who is currently living in Bengaluru and cannot visit him due to ill health.
