Decision possible in cabinet meeting on changing the name of Ramnagar district to ‘Bengaluru South’

Karnataka : Sources have said that a decision to rename Ramanagara district as ‘Bengaluru South District’ can be taken in the cabinet meeting to be held on Thursday.

In July 2024, the cabinet approved the renaming of Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South. After this, the state government sent a request to the central government for approval.

In March this year, Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda had said that although the proposal was sent to the central government after the cabinet decision, the response was not positive.

The state government has now included this issue in the agenda of Thursday’s cabinet meeting and it is being said that a decision is likely on it.

A notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1953 said that the state government has to propose to the Ministry of Home Affairs to change the names of villages, towns or cities and railway stations. After this, the central government can issue a no-objection certificate to the state government to issue a gazette notification.

However, official sources said that changing the names of cities, villages and districts comes under the jurisdiction of the state government.
