Decision on Dhurandhar’s release deferred – Delhi High Court asks CBFC to reconsider

Entertainment: Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh’s upcoming film “Dhurandhar” has been embroiled in controversy. The parents of the late martyr Major Mohit Sharma have approached the court, claiming that the film appears to be inspired by their son’s life and a specific military operation, without their permission.

What’s the Controversy – What the Father Said

The petition states that the leaked trailer and promotional material for “Dhurandhar” suggest that the film is inspired by Major Sharma’s name, life, and martyrdom.

The family has requested the court to ban the film’s release without their consent or the approval of the Indian Army. They stated that filming such a sensitive subject without prior permission is against privacy, dignity, and sensitive military information.

https://adani.news/wp-admin/post.php?post=149847&action=editThe petition also states that some of Major Sharma’s missions were in his capacity as Secretary—such operations are considered sensitive information, and filming them without military approval could pose a threat to national security.
Court’s Decision – No ban on release yet, but…
After a hearing on Monday (December 1, 2025), the Delhi High Court refused to immediately ban the release.
However, the court directed the CBFC to seriously consider the objections raised by Major Sharma’s parents. If necessary, the CBFC was asked to refer the film to an expert panel of the Army.
The court clarified that although the petition has been dismissed, all details must be examined before issuing a seal-certification.
Producers’ Argument
The filmmakers and their lawyer argue that ‘Dhurandhar’ is a fiction-thriller, not a biopic. They say that the film’s story, characters, and background are completely fictional and are not directly inspired by Major Sharma’s life.
The CBFC representative informed the court that the certification process is still ongoing and will be completed soon.
What will happen now—will it be released or not?
Currently, there is no “ban” on ‘Dhurandhar’—but the decision regarding the film’s release rests entirely with the CBFC. If the Board deems that parental complaints and safety concerns are substantial, further conditions or changes may be imposed before certifying the film.

On the other hand, if the filmmakers and the CBFC determine that the film is fictional and has no connection to real-life people or missions—then the film can be released on its scheduled date of December 5, 2025.

While the court did not immediately ban the release of ‘Dhurandhar,’ it clearly directed the CBFC to seriously consider the objections raised by Major Mohit Sharma’s parents and, if necessary, seek the Army’s opinion. This decision has currently postponed the film’s scheduled release.
