Congress-Raijor Alliance Stages Show of Strength in Mariani; Gyanshree Bora Files Nomination

Assam: On March 20, a massive display of strength was witnessed in the Mariani Assembly constituency as Gyanshree Bora, the candidate representing the Congress-Raijor Dal alliance, filed her nomination papers. With this development, the stage has been set for a fierce electoral battle against the incumbent MLA, Rupjyoti Kurmi.
The day of the nomination filing transformed into a major mass mobilization drive, with hundreds of supporters participating in a grand rally that proceeded from Mariani to Jorhat. Marked by the rhythmic beat of drums, spirited slogans, and overwhelming enthusiasm, the rally underscored the fact that the opposition alliance is fully prepared to mount a formidable challenge in this constituency.
After filing her nomination papers at the office of the Jorhat Commissioner, Bora stated that if elected, she would raise key issues concerning Mariani in the Legislative Assembly. She emphasized that her primary objective would be to ensure that the voices of the people are heard and that long-pending grievances are resolved.
Bora, a former Assistant Lecturer in Chemistry, remarked that her entry into politics is driven by her unwavering commitment to public service and development. She highlighted critical issues—such as the Assam-Nagaland border dispute, water scarcity, dilapidated road infrastructure, and unemployment—that require immediate attention.
Taking aim at Kurmi, she alleged that despite having been elected multiple times over the past 25 years, the issues plaguing the constituency have not been effectively raised in the House. “The people have repeatedly strengthened his position,” she asserted, “yet their own voices have remained unheard.”
Kurmi, a five-time MLA from Mariani, had initially won this seat as a Congress leader. Subsequently, in 2021, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and successfully retained the seat in the by-election that followed. Exuding confidence, Bora stated that he perceives a “wave of change” sweeping through Mariani, citing the growing support he is receiving from various panchayats. He also criticized the ruling party over issues concerning constitutional rights and its allegedly divisive politics, advocating instead for unity and inclusive development.
Describing this election as a collective battle for the opposition forces, Bora emphasized that the outcome would ultimately reflect the will of the people.
Given that Mariani is considered a strong BJP bastion, this contest will now serve as a test of whether a fresh face like Bora can successfully unseat a long-standing and firmly entrenched incumbent MLA. Consequently, this has emerged as one of the electoral battles in Upper Assam that will be watched with keen interest by all.
