Congress promises health and education reforms in Mizoram

Mizoram: Senior Congress leader Lalnunmawia Chuaungo said on March 30 that if the party comes to power, it will bring about a “complete overhaul” of Mizoram’s governance model, with a special focus on primary healthcare and education reforms.

Speaking at a party event, Chuaungo, who is also the former Chief Secretary of Mizoram, said that Congress will prioritize strengthening the primary healthcare system, emphasizing early detection and timely treatment of diseases. He said that primary health centers will be upgraded with better-equipped labs to improve service delivery.

On education, he said the party will emphasize primary education to build a strong academic foundation that will lead to better outcomes in higher studies. He alleged that both the previous Mizo National Front government and the current Zoram People’s Movement administration have misused the education sector for political purposes.

Chuaungo also advocated a change in governance philosophy, saying the government should focus on development instead of acting like a commercial entity. He suggested that many activities currently managed by the state could be handled by private enterprises, which would help create employment and improve governance.

Targeting political enemies, he claimed that public resentment had grown during the MNF regime, while accusing the ZPM of coming to power by making unfulfilled promises. He alleged that the ZPM government was acting arbitrarily and taking the state in the wrong direction.

He further claimed that the ZPM had previously delayed elections to consolidate control over the Aizawl Municipal Corporation. Voting for the 19-member AMC is scheduled for April 21, and counting will take place on April 27.
