COIMBATORE: Makhana elephant raids grocery shops in Masinagudi
Coimbatore: A ‘makhana’ (male without teeth) elephant broke into two grocery shops and attacked them in Masinagudi on Thursday morning. The elephant broke out of the Singara forest and entered ‘Vazhaithottam’ village in the limits of Masinagudi panchayat. It broke the shutters of the shops and ate rice, sugar and other essential items kept for sale in the shops. Hearing some noise, the villagers gathered and attempted to chase the elephant away. However, enraged by their nuisance, the elephant retaliated and attempted to attack. After having a hearty meal, the elephant went back to its own forest.
Though there have been reports of elephants attacking shops located in Masinagudi, Bokkapuram and Maavanalla villages, villagers believe that one of those habitual attackers has moved to the Vazhaithottam area. They have urged the forest department to be vigilant to prevent any conflict.
