As soon as we receive it, we will take further steps and call the assembly session,” Dhami said. The tenure of the committee headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai had been extended thrice earlier, with the latest extension of four months in September last year.
“The Uttarakhand government has extended the tenure of the Expert Committee for Uniform Civil Code by four months,” said a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office on September 23, 2023. UCC was promised to the people of the state before the 2022 assembly elections in Uttarakhand. Article 44 of the Constitution of India states that the State shall endeavor to secure a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) throughout India. The UCC proposes a common set of laws dealing with marriage, inheritance, adoption and other matters.
The UCC, which has been a hot topic over the past four years that has polarized opinions, came to light after Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a strong case for the implementation of a similar law in June last year in an address in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
