Clash in corporation meeting: DMK woman councillor slaps AIADMK councillors
Tamil Nadu : A woman DMK member slapped the AIADMK opposition leader on the cheek when he raised questions about irregularities in contracts during the Salem Corporation meeting, leading to a stir. A regular meeting of the Salem Corporation was held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Mayor A. Ramachandran. The meeting was chaired by Commissioner M. Ilangovan. Speaking on the occasion, the members said that water distribution in the corporation is not happening properly. Water is being supplied only once in 8 to 12 days in various areas. Due to this, the public is facing a lot of problems. Also, steps should be taken to reduce the increase in property tax. They stressed on various demands like early completion of the sewage canal work in the corporation. After this, opposition leader Yadavamurthy alleged that the work was started without informing the members. He alleged that in particular, the minister’s supporters are being given work, who had asked for a higher amount of contract, while those who asked for a lesser amount of contract are being given work. Protesting this, DMK members raised slogans in the Assembly. This led to a heated argument between DMK and AIADMK members. At that time, DMK member Suhasini of ward 45 slapped Leader of Opposition Yadavamurthy on the cheek. This created a ruckus in the assembly.
After this, there was a debate between AIADMK and DMK members one after the other, which led to a clash. After this, DMK member Suhasini was thrown out of the meeting venue by other DMK members.
Meanwhile, the mayor declared the meeting over. The national anthem was played and the mayor left the place.
Later, AIADMK members led by Leader of Opposition Yadavamurthy sat in front of the mayor’s chair in the corporation assembly building and started protesting.
Speaking to reporters, Yadavamurthy said, “We highlighted the problems of the ruling party in the meeting. On this, DMK woman member Suhasini of the 45th ward attacked me by making inappropriate remarks. Our protest will continue until disciplinary action is taken against her. Till then, we will not leave from here.” AIADMK members fainted: Following this, AIADMK members led by Yadavamurthy sat on a dharna. At that time, Yadavamurthy and AIADMK member of 25th ward Sasikala fainted and were admitted to the government hospital. Other AIADMK members joined the protest.
Corporation Commissioner Ma. Elangovan spoke to them and assured them of action against those involved. Following this, the AIADMK members left the corporation office.
