China again warns Philippines after third collision at Sabina Shoal
China: The coast guard on Saturday issued its fourth warning in a week against the Philippine vessel’s activities near the disputed Sabina Shoal in the South China Sea, as both sides accused each other of another “intentional collision.” According to China Coast Guard (CCG) spokesman Liu Dejun, the Philippine coast guard ship BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701) “intentionally collided with the Chinese CCG 5205” around noon on Saturday after “continuous maneuvers and … provocations” since the morning. He said the Chinese side had issued warnings before the collision and had chased away the Philippine coast guard ship. Saturday marked the third collision between the two sides in two weeks, as tensions continue to rise over rival territorial claims in the vast, resource-rich South China Sea. “We once again warn the Philippines to face reality and abandon illusions, and the only correct way is to immediately recall [the BRP Teresa Magbanua] back to its own,” Liu said. “Avoid misjudging the situation, creating hotspots and escalating the situation, otherwise the Philippine side will have to bear all the consequences.” Philippine Coast Guard spokesman Jay Tarrilla blamed the Chinese coast guard.
