Chief Minister MK Stalin laid the foundation stone for the Thiruvanmiyur-Uthandi elevated corridor

Chennai: Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi elevated corridor project. It will be 13 km long and has an estimated cost of ₹2,100 crore.
Once the elevated corridor is complete, travel time between the two locations will be reduced from one hour to 10 minutes.
Last week, the Madras High Court dismissed a petition filed by infrastructure company Dilip Buildcon Limited, challenging the awarding of the contract to KNR Construction Limited. The Tamil Nadu State Highways Authority (TANSHA), formed in 2024 to implement road projects through public-private partnerships (PPP), will undertake the project. The project was announced in the 2025-26 budget in the Assembly.
The elevated corridor will start from the ECR-Lattice Bridge junction in Thiruvanmiyur and end at Uthandi. The corridor will have four lanes, with a width of 17.25 meters and a height of 5.5 meters. The junctions at Akkarai, Neelankarai, and Lattice Bridge Roads will be improved, and the road will be six-lane at some points. The elevated corridor will have all modern amenities, including road signage, reflective studs, noise-prevention walls, and LED lights.
The elevated corridor will reduce congestion on the East Coast Road (ECR) and ensure a safe and comfortable journey for Chennai residents.
It is estimated that approximately 1.1 lakh people use the ECR and approximately 69,000 vehicles use the 15-km stretch between Thiruvanmiyur and Uthandi. This stretch has 17 traffic signal junctions and 347 minor roads connecting to the ECR on both sides. The areas on both sides of the road are rapidly developing, with IT companies, educational institutions, hospitals, hotels, commercial spaces, and residential areas increasing. In addition to residents, IT company workers and students also use this road to commute to and from Chennai. Widening the road from four lanes to six lanes is expected to reduce traffic congestion.
The road widening work includes constructing 5-foot-wide stormwater drains on both sides and a 4-foot-wide median.
A roundabout will be constructed at Akkarai to connect the ECR to the old Mahabalipuram Road. The elevated corridor will have five entry and exit points at LB Road Junction, Thiruvanmiyur RTO, Neelankarai, Injambakkam, and Akkarai, making it easier for locals to access the elevated corridor.
