Chennai: Residents of Poompuhar Nagar worried about stray cattle and uncleaned garbage

Chennai: The stray cattle menace continues, even as the Greater Chennai Corporation claims to have contained the problem in most parts of the city. Though a few stray cattle are caught here and there, it has become a persistent problem in the city and its suburbs, with residents expressing concern over the safety hazards they pose. In Poompuhar Nagar in Kolathur, especially on 11th Cross Street, locals say stray cattle have become a daily nuisance. The cattle are often seen loitering around dustbins even when they are full and spilling all over. “Though Greater Chennai Corporation employees claim to regularly remove garbage from the dustbins, they are never cleaned thoroughly. Most of the time, garbage remains strewn across the area. The cattle graze in the filth in search of food,” said Geetha V, a resident of the area.
Being a densely populated residential area, the presence of stray cattle has become a constant cause of fear among locals. Geetha added, “At night, due to poor lighting, motorists have a hard time navigating this path. Cattle block the path, making it unsafe.” Residents also raised concerns about cleanliness and safety. Another resident said, “Flies are swarming around the dustbins and we often see stray dogs rummaging through the garbage. The stench is unbearable and the presence of these animals adds to the safety concerns.” Residents have urged the Greater Chennai Corporation to take immediate action and clear the garbage properly, and address the stray cattle issue before it turns into a serious incident. When contacted, a Greater Chennai Corporation official said, “The issue will be resolved soon.”
