Chennai: Police extort money from jewellery shop employee

Chennai: Four police officers from the Enforcement Branch in Madhavaram, who allegedly extorted money and gold from a jewelry store employee 10 days ago, have been transferred to the Armed Reserve. Police sources said that about 10 days ago, Special Sub-Inspectors Mohanraj and Satishkumar, Head Constable Charles, and Constable Velmurugan stopped Nagaraj, a native of Andhra Pradesh, while he was loading a bag into an auto-rickshaw near the Madhavaram bus stand.

Suspecting the bag contained drugs, the officers took Nagaraj to the Enforcement Station. When they checked the bag, they found that it did not contain drugs as suspected, but instead contained ₹10 lakh in cash and jewelry worth over ₹1 crore. Nagaraj was allegedly carrying this cash and gold for his employer, Mohan, a jeweler in Sowcarpet. The jewelry was returned, but only ₹9.25 lakh was returned. Nagaraj informed Mohan, who raised the matter with senior police officers. An internal investigation confirmed that the four policemen had taken cash from Nagaraj. Following this, all four were transferred.
