Chennai has enough water even after summer: Minister Nehru

Chennai: State Municipal Administration Minister KN Nehru on Wednesday assured the state Assembly that the city’s reservoirs have sufficient storage to meet the city’s water requirement even after the upcoming summers. Replying to questions raised during Question Hour in the state Assembly, Nehru said four years ago the city had a capacity of only 900 MLD (million litres per day), but now it has a capacity of 1,100 MLD. Nehru said with the existing storage in the city’s reservoirs, the city can be supplied with water even after the upcoming summers.

Arguing that sometimes storage is more at one place, sometimes less at another, the minister said the ring main pipeline project, for which Rs 2,000 crore has been allocated in the 2025-26 budget, will streamline the city’s water distribution network. Nehru also assured to build overhead tanks wherever required in the city. He said this while replying to a related question raised by Maduravoyal MLA Ganapathy. Responding to another query on the status of pending Metro works in the city, mainly in Ganeshapuram, R.K. Nagar and T. Nagar, the Municipal Administration Minister said most of the Metro works would be completed in the next three months, except for the Ganeshapuram Metro, which would take an additional two months to complete.
