Chennai: Contract workers beat a young man to death on charges of stealing a bag

Chennai: A youth (around 25 years) who tried to steal a bag from a sleeping contract worker at the Central Railway Station was later found unconscious and died in the hospital. According to reports, the unidentified youth had tried to steal the bag from one of the cleaning staff on June 2. The worker woke up and along with another worker attacked him. Following this, two Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel present at the station took the injured man and left him outside the station. “Later the same day, patrolling police found him unconscious on the floor,” a Government Railway Police (GRP) official said.

“An FIR was lodged, following which both the workers were arrested. They were remanded under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the BNS. The victim was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) but died shortly after.” The post-mortem report stated the cause of death as head injury. However, investigations revealed that the fatal injury was not caused during the assault by the staff as they did not hit him on the head. “The deceased, said to be around 25 years old, is yet to be identified and his body is currently kept at the RGGGH mortuary,” the official said.
