Chennai: 1,005 crime cases registered in 15 months, 948 resolved

Chennai: The Greater Chennai police on Monday said its Central Crime Branch (CCB), which deals with white-collar crimes, organised crimes and cybercrimes, registered 1,005 cases from January 2024 to April 2025 and completed investigation of 948 pending cases in the same period, demonstrating efficiency in disposal of cases. During this period, 747 accused, including 11 cyber criminals nabbed from other states, were arrested. Apart from criminal cases, the CCB heard 8,145 public petitions, completed investigations and took appropriate action in 6,023, reinforcing the department’s commitment to public service and grievance redressal, the GCP said. An official release said, “As a proactive step to curb habitual offenders, 88 accused were placed in preventive detention under the Goondas Act. Further, trial processes were completed in several important cases resulting in conviction of 121 persons wherein the accused were punished by the respective courts,” and added that 707 NBWs (non-bailable warrants) were successfully executed.

Highlighting some of the achievements of the wing, the GCP said the fake passport wing of CCB busted two organised gangs resulting in the arrest of the masterminds – Nalla Mohammed of Devakottai, Sathish Kumar of Madurai and their associates. Following a complaint from the Deputy Consulate General of the Republic of Korea, the Cyber ​​Crime Cell of CCB busted a fake Korean visa website racket with the arrest of its mastermind Mohammed Parvez from Mumbai. In a major victory for the CCB’s Entrust Document Fraud wing, four accused who duped a city resident by selling temple-owned land through forged documents were convicted. In a case of child abuse and suspicious death in Aminjikarai in February 2024, which was handed over to the CCB, the police arrested six people, including a businessman and his wife, following the death of a 14-year-old girl working as a domestic help in their house in Aminjikarai. Charges were filed under the POCSO Act, SC/ST Act, JJ Act and Bonded Labour System Abolition Act. All six accused were detained under the Goondas Act.
