Chaudhary Aslam’s widow objects to Ranveer’s film ‘Dhurandhar’, threatens legal action

Entertainment: Ranveer Singh’s blockbuster spy thriller Dhurandhar has landed in yet another controversy. Just a day after the parents of the late Major Mohit Sharma moved the Delhi High Court to block the film’s release, the widow of Pakistani police officer Chaudhry Aslam has now objected, threatening to take legal action if her husband is portrayed in a negative or disrespectful manner.
Why Chaudhry Aslam’s family is objecting
Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar is set against the difficult backdrop of Karachi’s Lyari district – an area formerly controlled by rival criminal gangs and terror networks. In the film, renowned actor Sanjay Dutt plays Chaudhry Aslam, a real-life Karachi police officer renowned for his fearless actions against gangsters and militants.
Aslam, who led major operations against figures like Rehman Dakait and Uzair Baloch, was killed in a bomb attack on the Lyari Expressway on January 9, 2014. The Mohmand chapter of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Taliban claimed responsibility for the murder, which also killed two police officers, Aslam’s driver, and his guard. He had survived a previous bomb attack on his home in 2011.
After the film’s official trailer was released earlier this month, Aslam’s widow, Naureen Aslam, expressed concern over the portrayal of her late husband.
Naureen Aslam objected to a dialogue in the trailer.
Speaking to PTI, Naureen said she is waiting for the film’s theatrical release on December 5 to fully see how her husband is portrayed. However, she has already objected to a specific dialogue in which the character is referred to as “the child of a devil and a jinn.”
She said, “We are Muslims, and such words are insulting not only to Aslam but also to his mother, who was a simple, honest woman.” Naureen said that if the film portrays Aslam in a negative light, defames him, or uses propaganda, she will not hesitate to take legal action. She added, “If I find my husband portrayed in a negative light or any propaganda against him in the film, I will definitely take all legal steps.”
Claims of “defaming Pakistan”
Naureen also criticized Indian filmmakers’ repeated interest in Pakistani stories.
She said, “It’s strange that Indian filmmakers can’t find any other subject matter than defaming Pakistan.”
“My husband was a brave and courageous police officer, and criminals and terrorists feared his name. I’m surprised they’ve portrayed Rehman Dacoit as a major terrorist, even though I know from my husband that he was an extortionist, kidnapper, and criminal.”
In Dhurandhar, Akshaye Khanna plays Rehman Dacoit, while R. Madhavan plays Indian spymaster Ajay Sanyal. Arjun Rampal plays Major Iqbal of Pakistan’s ISI. Ranveer Singh’s character remains largely undisclosed, though the trailer suggests he plays an Indian agent who infiltrates the dangerous underworld of Lyari.
Release Shrouded in Legal Clouds
Chaudhary Aslam’s family’s objection comes amid an ongoing petition by the family of Ashok Chakra awardee Major Mohit Sharma, who alleges the film depicts scenes from the officer’s life without consent or proper permission.
Despite these growing concerns, Dhurandhar is currently scheduled to release in theatres on December 5.
