Bhubaneswar: Police on Friday said an FIR has been registered against BJP leader Manmath Routray for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi during the recent Nuapada assembly by-election.

An official said the Cyber Police Station in Bhubaneswar registered a case against Routray under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act, 2000. They said the case was filed on Thursday based on a written complaint filed by state BJP leader Jayanta Kumar Jena on November 14.

The complainant said Routray allegedly posted content on social media that was “derogatory, misleading, and derogatory towards the Prime Minister and Majhi.” Citing the FIR, the official said, “Upon perusal of the complaint, it was found that Manmath Routray was seen using derogatory, misleading, and derogatory words in a video clip and pointing fingers at the Prime Minister and the Odisha Chief Minister.” He said the allegations in the complaint amount to “defamation and damage to reputation.” BJP candidate Jay Dholakia won the Nuapada assembly by-election by 83,748 votes. Congress came in second, while the state’s main opposition party, the BJD, came in third.
