Buying a gold earring at a low price proved costly, the buyer and the thief were arrested.

Raigarh. Under the direction of Senior Superintendent of Police Shashi Mohan Singh, prompt action is being taken against property-related crimes in the district. In this connection, the Kharsia police station solved the case of gold earring theft in the Talabpar Hamalpara area within 24 hours and arrested two accused. On March 1, 2026, the applicant, Bindu Dewangan (40 years old), a resident of Talabpar Hamalpara Ward No. 5, Kharsia, filed a report stating that a pair of two masa gold earrings (worth approximately Rs. 20,000), purchased approximately two years ago, was kept in a cupboard and was stolen by an unknown person on February 22, 2026.

On the basis of the report, a case was registered under Crime No. 88/2026, Sections 331(3), 305(A) of the Indian Penal Code*, and investigation was initiated. During the investigation, Kharsia police immediately detained and interrogated a suspect, Mahesh Devangan (19 years old), a resident of Hamalpara Talabpar. He confessed to the theft. The accused revealed that he had sold the stolen earring to Sonu Prajapati (24 years old), a resident of Jawahar Colony, Ward No. 3, Kharsia, for ₹10,000 and spent the proceeds.

Upon interrogation, Sonu Prajapati was found to have purchased stolen goods, and Section 317(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) was added to the case. The gold earring was recovered from the accused. Both accused were duly arrested, presented before the court, and sent on judicial remand. Inspector Trinath Tripathi, Assistant Sub-Inspector Uday Sidar, Head Constable Anant Tiwari, Constable Savil Chandra, and Damrudhar Patel played a key role in the entire operation.
