BSP MLA Umashankar Singh passes away; party’s representation in the Legislative Assembly also comes to an end.

Umashankar Singh, a senior leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the MLA representing the Rasra assembly constituency in Ballia, passed away late Wednesday night. He had been battling cancer for a long time and was undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, Haryana, where he breathed his last. With Umashankar Singh’s passing, the Bahujan Samaj Party’s representation in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly has also come to an end. He was the party’s sole MLA in the assembly. Prior to this, the BSP already had no MPs in the Lok Sabha. Consequently, the party now has no elected representatives in either the state assembly or the Parliament. Suffering from cancer for a long time

According to reports, Umashankar Singh had been undergoing treatment for cancer for quite some time. His health had been steadily deteriorating, leading to his admission to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. Although he was receiving medical care under the supervision of doctors, he passed away late Wednesday night. News of his death left his supporters and well-wishers deeply saddened.

Mayawati had also visited to inquire about his health

The extent of Umashankar Singh’s popularity and his pivotal role within the party can be gauged from the fact that when he fell ill last year, BSP supremo Mayawati personally visited his residence to inquire about his well-being. The party chief’s personal visit to his home underscored just how important a leader Umashankar Singh was to the BSP.

At that time, Mayawati had wished for his speedy recovery. However, his illness continued to worsen, and he ultimately passed away on Wednesday night.

Elected MLA three consecutive times

Umashankar Singh was elected as an MLA from the Rasra assembly constituency in Ballia district for three consecutive terms. He secured victories in the assembly elections held in 2012, 2017, and 2022. A notable aspect was that even as the BSP’s support base in Uttar Pradesh steadily declined, Umashankar Singh succeeded in retaining his seat.
