Brain dead patient’s kidney transplanted in Raipur AIIMS

Raipur. The kidney of a brain dead patient was transplanted to a 20 year old youth in Raipur AIIMS. The young man was in a critical condition but kidney transplant was not possible due to the family members not matching their kidneys. A green corridor was also built in Raipur to transport the kidney to AIIMS.

At the time of transplantation, the new kidney is placed in the lower abdomen. The blood vessels of the new kidney are connected to the blood vessels found in the lower abdomen. The ureter of the new kidney is connected to the bladder. A kidney transplant surgery usually takes three to four hours.

Both the kidneys function more or less equally and any one kidney of any healthy person can be donated.
