BJP MP’s comments against SC an attempt to weaken the judiciary: Rana KP

Punjab: Congress leader and former speaker of Punjab assembly Rana KP Singh on Tuesday condemned BJP leader Nishikant Dubey’s remarks against the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of India, calling it an “attempt to undermine” the country’s judiciary. “Such attempts are deliberately made to intimidate, deceive and undermine the judicial system of the country, which has stood the test of time and which has ensured the survival of democracy and the Constitution,” he said in a statement. Dubey had on Saturday launched a scathing attack against the Supreme Court, saying Parliament and state assemblies should be shut down if the apex court has to legislate.

He also hit out at CJI Sanjiv Khanna and held him responsible for the “civil war” in the country. The BJP MP’s remarks came after the Centre assured the court that it would not implement some of the controversial provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act until the next day of hearing after the court raised questions on them. The senior Congress leader said that though the BJP has distanced itself from the MP’s “contemptuous remarks”, it remains to be seen what action the party will take against him. He said, “This is not an ordinary or thoughtless comment.”
