Bihar expressed disagreement on giving water to Jharkhand from Chandan Dam, hearing in Jharkhand High Court

Ranchi (IANS) | A hearing was held in the Jharkhand High Court on Monday on a public interest litigation related to the dispute between Bihar and Jharkhand on the distribution of water from Chandan Dam located in Banka, Bihar. In an affidavit filed by the Bihar government, it was told that water cannot be given to Jharkhand from the Chandan Dam, while the Jharkhand government has said in its affidavit that Godda district of the state should get water for irrigation.

This petition has been filed on behalf of BJP MP from Godda, Dr. Nishikant Dubey. It has been said in this that at the time of construction of this dam, water was to be made available for irrigation to Bihar and Jharkhand. Of the 100.5 km long canal taken out from it, 69.5 km part falls in Jharkhand and 31 km part in Bihar. Naturally Jharkhand should also get water for irrigation from this dam, but this is not happening. In the petition, he has demanded repair of the canal removed from the dam and providing water.

During the last hearing on this petition, the court had asked the governments of both the states to respond by filing affidavits regarding the status of canal repair. Counter affidavits were filed on behalf of the Government of Bihar and Jharkhand and it was told that the canal system of their part has not been repaired. Soon it will be completed.

On behalf of the applicant Nishikant Dubey, his advocate sought time to reply to the reply of the Government of Bihar and Jharkhand. Advocate Diwakar Upadhyay appeared on behalf of the applicant. A division bench headed by High Court Chief Justice Sanjay Kumar Mishra has fixed the next hearing of the case on May 26.
