Ayurvedic AIIMS to be set up in Hamirpur; new employment opportunities to open up.

HIMACHAL-PRADESH : A major step is being taken to elevate AYUSH health services and traditional medicine to new heights. Approximately 75 acres of land have been identified in the state’s Hamirpur district for the proposed Ayurvedic AIIMS. Once realized, this ambitious project will not only expand modern Ayurvedic medical facilities in the state but is also expected to generate over 1,500 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The state government believes that this institute could establish a new identity for Himachal in the fields of Ayurveda, research, medical education, and wellness tourism. Preliminary preparations for the project have been accelerated, and the concerned departments are advancing the necessary procedures.
State-of-the-art institute to be built on 75 acres
About 75 acres of land have been earmarked in Hamirpur for the proposed Ayurvedic AIIMS. The institute is likely to feature modern medical facilities alongside specialized centers for research into Ayurveda, Panchakarma, Yoga, Naturopathy, and medicinal plants.
Additionally, facilities such as a hospital, medical college, research laboratories, hostels, residential complexes, and training centers could be developed.
Boost to Ayurveda and research
The institute will not be limited to medical treatment alone; it will also promote scientific research into the Ayurvedic system of medicine. Special emphasis could be placed on developing new medicines, conserving medicinal plants, and integrating traditional medical knowledge with modern technology.
Experts believe this will provide new momentum to higher education and research in the AYUSH sector.
Potential for over 1,500 jobs
A significant number of employment opportunities are expected to arise during the construction and operational phases of the project. Young people could find employment in roles such as doctors, Ayurveda specialists, nursing staff, researchers, lab technicians, pharmacists, administrative staff, security personnel, and other support services.
Local residents are also likely to find employment during the construction phase.
Benefits to the local economy
The establishment of the Ayurvedic AIIMS is expected to boost sectors such as hotels, transport, restaurants, rental housing, medical stores, and other small businesses in Hamirpur and the surrounding areas. This could boost economic activities within the local trade and service sectors.
Furthermore, it could give a new impetus to medical and wellness tourism in the state, attracting patients and tourists from both within the country and abroad.
Better facilities for patients
Once the institute becomes operational, residents of Himachal Pradesh may no longer need to travel to other states for advanced Ayurveda-based medical care. It is expected to offer a blend of traditional treatment methods and modern diagnostic facilities.
Special emphasis is also likely to be placed on treating serious and chronic ailments, as well as on Panchakarma, rehabilitation, and the management of lifestyle-related diseases.
A major government initiative
The state government aims to position Himachal Pradesh as a leading state in the fields of AYUSH and Ayurveda. The proposed institute is expected to have a positive impact across four key areas: medical education, research, healthcare services, and employment.
However, final decisions regarding the project’s construction, budget, and timeline will only become clear following approvals from the relevant departments and the central government.
