Assam: Commercial vehicles strike abbreviated after talks, operations to resume tomorrow

Guwahati: In response to the 48-hour strike initially called by owners of commercial vehicles, the Motor Workers Association of Assam decided to reduce the period to 24 hours. The decision was taken after extensive discussions between the association leaders and state transport department officials to minimize the inconvenience caused to the public. The substantive meeting, which lasted for five hours, focused on the concerns raised by the Motor Employees Union and the steps needed to address them. The main reason behind the decision to reduce the levy was the non-implementation of the law yet. In return, the Transport Department guaranteed the union leaders that the government would take necessary steps to resolve their queries. The strike had a deep impact on daily commuters, especially office workers, who faced difficulties in reaching their workplace due to suspension of bus, taxi and app-based taxi services. The trouble was especially witnessed in major cities like Guwahati, where transport came to a standstill. The previous day they had seen massive spills of Cola at petrol terminals in Assam cities as residents hoped to fill their fuel tanks amid concerns of a possible supply shortage. The ripple effect extended beyond public transportation and affected many aspects of daily life. This industrial action was instigated by the protests surrounding the proposed Indian Penal Code (BNS) intended to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The new law provides for strict sanctions for drivers involved in serious traffic accidents due to negligence. According to the proposed law, if conductors do not immediately inform the police or administration about such incidents, they can face imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine of Rs 7 lakh. The decision to reduce the period of levy reflects the commitment between owners of commercial vehicles and the government, thereby providing temporary relief to the public. The Department of Transport’s guarantee suggests continued dialogue and possible resolution of the concerns raised by the Motor Workers Union. As the discussions continue, the impending changes in traffic accident laws add a layer of importance to the ongoing developments in Assam’s transport sector.
