Assam CM meets Tata Chairman, prepares for talks with global semiconductor companies in Davos

Assam: Assam’s efforts to build a semiconductor ecosystem were highlighted at the World Economic Forum when Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma spoke with N. Chandrasekaran on January 20. He emphasized the role of the Tata Group in advancing the sector in the state.

The Chief Minister said the discussion with the Tata Group chairman took place before a meeting with global semiconductor leaders during the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Assam is participating in the WEF for the first time this year. Speaking to reporters in Davos, Sarma said there has been increased interest in the state because the ecosystem with Tata is “gradually developing.”

He said, “We’re having a good meeting tomorrow on semiconductors. With Tata, we’re lining up. There’s a lot of interest in Assam because the ecosystem is gradually developing with Tata being there.” He added that discussions with industry leaders are expected to help move the plan forward, even though “nothing specific has been finalized yet.”

The Chief Minister also emphasized Guwahati’s role as a hub for skilled workers from across the Northeast, while acknowledging that geographical constraints in other states have made it difficult to set up large industrial projects.

Speaking to investors in Davos, Sarma urged companies to look beyond traditional hubs. He said, “Assam is now an emerging state and a growing economy. When you are thinking of investing in India, you can consider Assam as a destination.” He also cited official data showing Assam as the country’s fastest-growing state and Reserve Bank of India data.

With semiconductor discussions dominating its debut in Davos, Assam is looking to establish itself as a reliable investment destination in India’s growing technology supply chain.
