Arrival of wheat increased in Amritsar district

Punjab: The arrival of wheat in the grain markets of the district is increasing with each passing day as harvesting is gaining momentum. District Mandi Board officials have reported the arrival of 7,417 metric tons of wheat on Sunday. With this, a total of 15,544 metric tonnes of crop has arrived in the mandis of the district so far.

District officials said 60 percent (9,145 metric tons) of the total produce that arrived in the markets has been purchased. Of the total, government procurement agencies have procured 8,431 MT, while private players’ share is only 714 MT.

Among the government procurement agencies, Markfed has so far procured a maximum of 3,462 MT, PUNGREN 2,360 MT, Punjab Warehousing Corporation 1,329 MT and PUNSUP 1280 MT. Food Corporation of India (FCI), the central government’s procurement agency, has not made any purchases in the district so far.
Wheat crop was sown in 1.88 lakh hectares in the district and 7.5 lakh metric tonnes of the produce is expected to reach the markets by the end of the season. As harvesting has gained momentum, the district administration has also asked the Food and Civil Supplies Corporation and procurement agencies to ensure timely lifting of the produce from the mandis.

Mandi Board officials said harvesting will reach its peak by the end of this week. He said that efforts are being made to ensure timely procurement of the produce immediately after reaching the market.
The district administration has appealed to the farmers to ensure that the crop is fully ripe before harvesting. Officials said farmers are also being motivated to use eco-friendly means to manage crop residues.
