Archaeologist Arun Sharma passes away, funeral to be held at Raipur Mahadev Ghat

Raipur. The country’s renowned archaeologist Padmashree Dr. Arun Kumar passed away late on Wednesday night. He was 90 years old. Dr. has been a long-time archaeological advisor to the Government of Chhattisgarh. Dr. Sharma’s last journey will leave for Mahadev Ghat Mukti Dham from his residence in Changorabhatha Karan Nagar at 10 am on Thursday. Excavation of Sirpur in Chhattisgarh was done under the supervision of Dr. Arun Kumar Sharma. Be it Ram Setu or Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, his opinion has been important on matters related to archaeology.
Late resident of Koliyara of Rajnandgaon. Arun Kumar Sharma, son of Ananddhar Dewan, was born on 12 November 1933 in Mohdi (Chandkhuri, district Raipur) to maternal uncle Hinchha Tiwari and Loknath Tiwari. Primary education took place in Pipariya (Sagar), Mandla, Durg and Bilaspur. Did B.Sc from Raipur Science College and M.Sc from Sagar University in 1958. Worked as a chemist in BSP Bhilai for some time. Joined the service of Archaeological Survey of India in 1959 and after working on various posts, retired from the post of Superintendent Archaeologist in 1992. Appointed OSD in IGNCA in 1993-94. Contributed to the establishment of Maa Anandamayi Ashram and Museum in Kankhal (Haridwar) in 1995.
Dr. Sharma started excavation of sites in Sirpur (Chhattisgarh) and Mansar (Maharashtra) in 1999 with Jagatpati Joshi, Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India. In 2004, he became the archaeological advisor to Chhattisgarh government. He made an important contribution in bringing to light the ancient glory of Sirpur through excavation. He also participated in the cross-examination on behalf of Vishwa Hindu Parishad in the Lucknow High Court in the case of the disputed structure of Ayodhya. Madaku Island excavation and restoration work of Dholkal Ganesh was completed under his guidance. Dr. Sharma was very disciplined and punctual. His perseverance and dedication towards field work is remarkable. In view of his contribution, the Government of India honored him with Padma Shri in 2016.
