Apple’s foldable iPhone is likely to be stronger than expected, to use liquid metal hinge in place of titanium: Report

Apple will be introducing a foldable iPhone in the upcoming future and there is not much information about its development. According to the latest leak by a tipster on Weibo, who is quite accurate with Apple-related information, Apple’s foldable iPhone is expected to offer a hinge with liquid metal, reported GSMArena.

According to tipster Ming-Chi Kuo (who had hinted this earlier), Apple is likely to use liquid metal for its future iPhone Fold hinge. The latest leak has also confirmed that the use of this liquid metal will bring several benefits and this focuses on the rigidity of the device. According to the rumour, the “amorphous alloy” or the “metallic glass” offers a 2.5x better strength than that of titanium. This makes the liquid metal a perfect solution for a hinge. Similarly it will have better glossiness (similar to high-end stainless steel).

The amorphous particles those are present in the liquid metal are resistant to bending, deformation as well as pressure. This improves the longevity of the hinge as well as that of the device. Similarly, the hinge design is also expected to help reduce or remove the display crease.

The hinge will also offer a strong support to the flexible display (so that the panel can resist finger pressing). Apple is also working with hardware suppliers to eliminate the crease on the OLED display.
