Ancient temple discovered at Javathumalai near Tirupattur

Tamil Nadu: An ancient temple has been discovered near the Javathumalai area of Tirupattur district. The discovery was made during a field study conducted by the Tamil Department of Pure Heart College, Tirupattur. The team, comprising Professors K. Mohan Gandhi, Kannilam M. Munisamy, and research student Navish, identified the ancient structure during their study in the village of Pazhayapalayam in the Pungampattu area.
The team reported that the temple is located in a village in the Pungampattu area, which falls under the Javathumalai area of Tirupattur district. Locally, the village is known as Pazhayapalayam. During the field study, the team discovered this ancient stone temple on private agricultural land in the southern part of the village. This site had not previously been widely recorded as a religious or historical structure, making its discovery even more significant.
Professor K. Mohan Gandhi explained that the structure appears to be an ancient stone temple, significantly damaged over time. He added that the temple’s construction style and structure suggest it may be linked to the region’s long-standing religious history. The villagers recognize the site as the Mariamman Temple and have long worshipped there.
Describing the temple’s structure, the research team noted that it features a western-facing brick tower, approximately 6 feet high, 6 feet long, and 6 feet wide, supported by stone pillars. This tower is partially preserved and significantly damaged by the effects of time. According to the team, a traditional vimana (spire) may have been atop the tower, which is now completely destroyed and no longer extant.
Researchers believe the temple may be an important example of rural religious life and historical architecture in the region. Based on preliminary studies, it is also estimated that the structure is quite old and deeply connected to local traditions.
The team further stated that such discoveries not only help in understanding regional history but also highlight local cultural heritage. They recommended that a detailed archaeological study of the site be conducted to learn more about its construction period, architectural style, and historical significance.
Local villagers have also described the discovery as significant, stating that the temple has long been a center of their religious faith, although its historical significance is only now being revealed. This discovery is also likely to generate increased interest among archaeology and history experts in the region.
This case is believed to uncover new layers of regional heritage and rural history, potentially furthering the cultural significance of the Javathumalai region.
