Amazon’s green strategy: entering nuclear reactors

Technology: Amazon is taking significant steps toward its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Recently, the company partnered with Dominion Energy, a major utility provider in Virginia, to explore the feasibility of building a small modular reactor (SMR) near one of Dominion’s existing power plants. This innovative energy solution is becoming popular due to its ability to operate without carbon emissions and its faster deployment compared to traditional nuclear reactors.

The decision to focus on Virginia is strategic;

This state is home to nearly half of the data centers in the United States. In anticipation of future growth, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a substantial investment of $35 billion by 2040 to establish additional data centers in the region. In addition, Amazon has entered into another agreement with Energy Northwest for the development, licensing, and construction of four small modular reactors in Washington state. These reactors will be operated by Energy Northwest and will supply direct energy to support Amazon’s operations. AWS CEO Matthew Garman stressed the growing demand for energy in the coming years, saying that renewable sources like wind and solar may not be enough to meet the needs, making nuclear power a great opportunity for sustainable energy production. This diversification into nuclear power is an important step in Amazon’s commitment to environmentally friendly initiatives.
