All schools and Anganwadi centers in Subarnapur closed due to heavy rain alert.

Odisha: Following a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the district by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Subarnapur district administration has declared a holiday for Friday for all government, aided, and private schools, as well as Anganwadi centers, as a precautionary measure. This decision was taken with the safety of students and young children in mind to prevent any untoward incidents during the adverse weather.
According to the order issued by the district administration, the decision was prompted by the continuous rainfall in the district and the likelihood of weather conditions worsening over the next few hours. The administration stated that the safety of children is the top priority and that educational institutions would remain closed for the day to avert any potential risks.
Reports indicate that the IMD has issued an ‘Orange Warning’ for Subarnapur district, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in several areas. The Meteorological Department has advised the public to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and adhere to the guidelines issued by the local administration.
In the issued order, the District Collector stated that all government and private schoolsâincluding upper primary and secondary schoolsâand Anganwadi centers would remain closed on Friday due to the inclement weather. The aim is to ensure that students and young children do not face any difficulties or hazards while commuting to and from school during the rains.
The administration also clarified that the weather situation is being constantly monitored, and further decisions will be taken based on evolving conditions if necessary. Relevant departments have been instructed to remain on alert and be prepared to handle any emergency situations.
According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall is expected in several districts of Odisha due to a weather system forming over the Bay of Bengal. Subarnapur is among the districts where heavy rain could lead to waterlogging, accumulation of water on roads, flood-like situations in low-lying areas, and disruptions to traffic. The district administration has appealed to parents to keep their children safe indoors and not allow them to venture out unnecessarily. They have been advised to keep a close watch on young children, in particular, and to prevent them from going near waterlogged areas, drains, rivers, or ponds.
Instructions have also been issued to Anganwadi workers and Education Department officials to ensure that information regarding the closure reaches all parents in a timely manner. Furthermore, steps must be taken to ensure that no child arrives at school or an Anganwadi center due to a lack of information.
The District Disaster Management Authority, Fire Services, Police, and other relevant departments have been directed to remain prepared to handle potential emergencies. The administration has instructed relief and rescue teams to stay ready with necessary equipment and to maintain special vigilance over vulnerable areas.
Weather experts state that an ‘Orange Warning’ signifies potentially severe weather conditions, requiring people to exercise extra caution. Heavy rainfall can lead to incidents such as lightning strikes, strong winds, uprooting of trees, and waterlogging on roads. Consequently, people are advised to stay in safe locations and adhere to the administration’s guidelines.
The Health Department has also urged the public to consume clean drinking water, take precautions against waterborne diseases, and step out of their homes during the rain only when essential. Medical professionals emphasize the need to pay special attention to the health of children and the elderly during periods of continuous rainfall.
The administration has advised farmers to monitor weather conditions and remain alert while working in their fields. They have been asked to avoid open areas if there is a likelihood of heavy rain or lightning. Livestock owners have also been instructed to keep their animals in safe locations.
Officials from various district departments have been directed to ensure a swift response to any emergency situation. Control rooms have been activated, and preparations are in place to launch relief and rescue operations immediately if required.
For now, the district administration has clarified that the closure of schools and Anganwadi centers on Friday has been announced solely as a precautionary measure. Academic activities will resume only after weather conditions normalize. The administration has urged citizens not to pay heed to rumors, to rely solely on official information, and to follow the guidelines issued by the Meteorological Department and the district administration. Prioritizing student safety above all else, this step is considered a significant precautionary measure aimed at minimizing potential risks.
