AIADMK Deputy Secretary Apsara Reddy resigns; says the decision was taken with a heavy heart.

Chennai. Tamil Nadu’s prominent political party, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), suffered a setback when Apsara Reddy, the party’s Deputy Secretary for Policy and Propaganda, announced her resignation from her post and primary membership of the party. Apsara Reddy announced her resignation via a statement, noting that she had made this decision with a heavy heart.

A Chennai native, Apsara Reddy was a well-known face within the AIADMK. She had also served as a party spokesperson. In July of last year, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami had entrusted her with the significant responsibility of Deputy Secretary for Publicity. In this role, she played an active part in the party’s policies, ideology, and public outreach campaigns.

In her statement, Apsara Reddy mentioned that her association with the AIADMK was not merely a political journey but also an emotional bond. She expressed deep respect and faith in the late leader and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa—affectionately known as “Amma” by party cadres. It was Jayalalithaa’s political vision and leadership that had drawn her to the movement.

She described her time with the AIADMK as truly special. She had been entrusted with various responsibilities within the party and had strived to work for the organization with utmost dedication. However, she has now decided to part ways with the party.

Apsara Reddy wrote in her statement, “With a heavy heart, I announce my resignation from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. My journey with the AIADMK was not just a political one. My respect and love for Amma, along with my belief in her ideology, were the reasons that drew me to this movement.”

Apsara Reddy is among the prominent figures from the transgender community who have carved a distinct identity for themselves in politics. She has consistently voiced her opinions on issues such as social causes, women’s rights, and equality. After entering politics, she also advocated for the inclusion and rights of the transgender community.

Within the AIADMK, her role was considered pivotal, particularly regarding party campaigning and media relations. She robustly articulated the party’s stance in television debates, press conferences, and public events. Thanks to her communication skills and political acumen, she was counted among the party’s key spokespersons.

Apsara Reddy’s political journey has been quite distinctive; she has worked with various political parties and shouldered diverse responsibilities. She was previously associated with the Congress party before joining the AIADMK. She had joined the AIADMK, inspired by Jayalalithaa’s leadership and policies.

Her resignation has sparked intense speculation within Tamil Nadu’s political circles. However, she did not explicitly cite any specific controversy or reason for her resignation in her statement; she merely referred to her emotional attachment and the fact that the decision was made with a heavy heart.

The AIADMK is currently striving to strengthen its position in Tamil Nadu politics. At such a juncture, the resignation of a prominent office-bearer is viewed as a significant development for the organization. Given the upcoming political activities, all eyes will be on the changes unfolding within the party.

In the concluding part of her statement, Apsara Reddy expressed her gratitude to the AIADMK’s leaders, cadres, and supporters. She remarked that her experience with the party would always remain a vital part of her life and affirmed that she would continue to respect ‘Amma’s’ legacy and ideals.
