Adani Ports gives India’s largest order worth Rs 450 crore to Cochin Shipyard

AHMEDABAD Ahmedabad: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) on Friday announced the procurement of eight state-of-the-art harbour tugs, estimated to have a total contract value of Rs 450 crore, to be constructed by Cochin Shipyard Ltd. The Adani Group flagship company said in a statement that the delivery of these tugs is expected in December 2026 and will continue till May 2028, significantly improving the efficiency and safety of vessel operations in Indian ports. The eight 70-tonne bollard pull tugs will increase Adani Ports’ total fleet to 152. Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director and CEO, APSEZ, said, “This collaboration for procurement from Cochin Shipyard Ltd reflects our commitment to enhance maritime infrastructure in India and reflects our confidence in the public sector undertakings of our country.” Gupta said, “By leveraging local manufacturing capabilities that are world-class, we aim to contribute to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, while ensuring that our operations meet international standards of safety and efficiency.”

Earlier, APSEZ had awarded Cochin Shipyard Ltd a contract to build two, 62-tonne bollard pull ASD (azimuthing stern drive) tugs for Ocean Sparkle Ltd, both of which were delivered ahead of schedule and deployed at Paradip Port and New Mangalore Port. The company said three additional ASD tugs are currently under construction, taking the total order to 13 tugs, aimed at providing a young fleet for efficient and reliable services in the port sector.

According to India’s largest integrated transport utility company, “This initiative underlines the importance of sustainable practices in shipbuilding and reinforces the strategic importance of the maritime industry in India’s economic development.” Adani Ports is the largest port developer and operator in India, with seven strategically located ports and terminals on the west coast and eight ports and terminals on the east coast, accounting for 27 per cent of the country’s total port volume. The company is also developing a transshipment port in Colombo and operates Container Terminal 2 at Haifa Port in Israel and Dar es Salaam Port in Tanzania.
