Accused of assault arrested near marriage garden, sent to jail by police

Raigarh: Police have arrested an accused and sent him to jail on judicial remand in connection with a serious assault near Vijayam Utsav Marriage Garden. The incident occurred on the night of May 24-25 last year, when a young man was attacked with weapons and fists in the Chakradharnagar police station area. Police have registered a case against the accused under sections of rioting and the Atrocity Act. At the time of the incident, the victim was returning from his sister’s home in Lamidraha village. At approximately 1:30 a.m., some young men, including Manish Bihari, Bablu Das Mahant, Ankul Thakur, and their companions, blocked his path on a motorcycle and scooter near Vijayam Utsav Marriage Garden. The accused abused him, punched him, and assaulted him with weapons.
The victim stated that the accused insulted him, believing him to be a member of a particular community, and threatened to kill him. After escaping, he informed his family about the incident. He was immediately hospitalized. Following the assault, the police registered a case under Crime No. 219/2025, sections 126(2), 396, 351(3), 118(1), 191(2), 191(3), and 190 BNS, and added section 3(2)(v)(a) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The accused fled immediately after the incident, fearing arrest. Under the direction of City Superintendent of Police, Mr. Mayank Mishra, the police continued their investigation and raids. On the night of February 20th, Ankul Thakur, alias Anshul Thakur, was spotted roaming around the city. The accused had completely changed his appearance, growing his hair and beard to evade police detection.
On the orders of CSP Mayank Mishra, the Chakradharnagar patrol team identified the accused, surrounded him, and arrested him. During interrogation, the accused confessed to his involvement in the incident. He was immediately sent to judicial custody and jailed. Officials stated that the search for the other absconding accused is ongoing, and the police are attempting to apprehend them soon through raids and surveillance. The local administration and police have made it clear that intimidation and assault against anyone based on caste or social affiliation will not be tolerated. Police stated that such violent incidents are being continuously monitored and strict legal action will be taken against the perpetrators. The incident has raised concerns about security and social sensitivity among residents of the area. Police have also appealed to the public to immediately report any crime or antisocial activity. Police stated that after the arrest of the other accused, the judicial process of the entire case will be completed, and no laxity will be spared in ensuring justice for the victim.
