A massive surge of faith witnessed in Tiruvannamalai on Adi Purnima.

Tiruvannamalai. A massive sea of ​​devotees thronged the famous Arunachaleswarar Temple in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday to mark the full moon day (Purnima) of the ‘Aadi’ month. An estimated 500,000 devotees undertook the sacred Girivalam (circumambulation of the hill) and offered prayers to Lord Arunachaleswarar. Anticipating the huge turnout, the temple authorities, district administration, and police department had made extensive arrangements for security and amenities.

According to Hindu religious beliefs, the full moon day of the ‘Aadi’ month holds special religious significance. On this occasion, devotees worship Lord Shiva by circumambulating the sacred Arunachala Hill. It is believed that performing Girivalam with faith and devotion fulfills wishes and brings happiness, peace, and prosperity into one’s life. Consequently, a large number of devotees—not only from Tamil Nadu but also from various other states across the country—flock to Tiruvannamalai for this occasion.

According to the temple administration, the ‘Aadi’ Purnima began at 7:32 PM on Tuesday and continues until 8:54 PM on Wednesday. The administration had previously announced that devotees could undertake the Girivalam during this period. As a result, devotees began arriving in Tiruvannamalai as early as Monday night, and heavy crowds were witnessed on the city streets and within the temple complex from Tuesday morning onwards.

Devotees were seen performing the circumambulation barefoot along the Girivalam route—which spans approximately 14 kilometers—while chanting the name of Lord Shiva. They offered prayers at various religious sites along the path, including the ‘Ashta Lingam’ (eight Lingam) temples, and participated in spiritual rituals. While many devotees undertook the Girivalam with their families, a large number of sadhus, saints, and devotional groups also joined the procession.

In view of the massive influx of devotees, the district administration had put extensive security measures in place. Additional police forces were deployed at sensitive locations, and a special traffic plan was implemented to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. Police officials set up barricades on key routes for crowd control and maintained constant surveillance to prevent any disorder.

The temple administration made special arrangements for drinking water, medical aid, rest areas, and sanitation for the convenience of devotees. Temporary medical camps were set up at various locations, with healthcare workers and ambulance services available round-the-clock. Given the hot weather, voluntary organizations and religious institutions also distributed water, buttermilk, and food at various points.

In view of the large crowds, the municipal administration paid special attention to cleanliness. Additional sanitation staff were deployed along the Girivalam route and within the temple premises. Special arrangements were made for waste collection to ensure devotees faced no inconvenience. Furthermore, fire department and disaster management teams remained fully alert.

This occasion was also economically significant for local traders. Shops selling flowers, prasad (offerings), religious items, food, and beverages witnessed heavy crowds throughout the day. Hotels, dharamshalas (pilgrim rest houses), and lodges were also almost fully occupied. Traders noted that religious events like Aadi Purnima provide a significant boost to local business and generate direct and indirect employment for thousands of people.

Devotees shared that performing the Girivalam (circumambulation) at the Arunachaleswarar Temple is not merely a religious ritual for them, but a spiritual experience as well. Many devotees visit every year on Aadi Purnima to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. They believe that Mount Arunachala is a manifestation of Lord Shiva himself and that circumambulating it brings special spiritual merit.

The administration appealed to devotees to use designated routes, exercise caution in crowded areas, and follow official instructions. Officials stated that the situation was constantly monitored throughout the event via CCTV cameras and a control room. All relevant departments were kept on alert to handle any emergency situation.

The massive gathering of hundreds of thousands of devotees in Tiruvannamalai on the occasion of Aadi Purnima once again underscored the religious significance of this historic pilgrimage site. According to the administration, all necessary arrangements were made to ensure safe darshan and a smooth Girivalam for the devotees, maintaining an atmosphere of devotion and discipline throughout the event. The influx of devotees is expected to continue until the full moon concludes on Wednesday night.
