A farmer’s unique formula: Bumper harvests achieved with reduced urea usage for 15 years.

UTTAR-PRADESH: A progressive farmer in Moradabad district has adopted a farming model that has not only reduced his input costs but also enhanced soil fertility. The farmer claims that for the past 15 years or so, his reliance on urea has been minimal, as he has embraced natural and organic methods to improve soil health. Neighboring farmers have also begun adopting this technique, reaping the benefits of lower costs combined with improved yields.

At a time when rising prices of chemical fertilizers are a growing concern for farmers, this approach has emerged as a prime example of how to make agriculture more sustainable and profitable.

What is the farmer’s ‘Sanjeevani Mantra’ (vital formula)?
The farmer’s key strategy revolves around the use of Jeevamrit (a liquid organic fertilizer), well-decomposed cow dung manure, crop residues, green manure, and a balanced application of organic microorganisms. These measures boost the levels of organic carbon and beneficial microorganisms in the soil, thereby providing natural nourishment to the crops.

The farmer explains that while he used to apply large quantities of urea every season in the past, the need for it steadily declined as he gradually adopted organic practices.

Soil health becomes the greatest asset
Experts note that the continuous use of excessive urea can compromise soil quality. In contrast, the use of organic manure and crop residues improves soil structure, water-holding capacity, and nutrient availability.

Instead of burning crop stubble after the harvest, the Moradabad farmer began incorporating it into the soil. He also regularly used cow dung manure and green manure. This practice led to a steady increase in the soil’s natural nutrient levels.

Significant reduction in costs
Expenditure on chemical fertilizers accounts for a major portion of total farming costs. The farmer states that thanks to organic methods, his need to purchase urea has become negligible, resulting in savings of thousands of rupees every season.

This reduction in costs was achieved without compromising production levels, thereby increasing the overall profitability of the farming operation.

What was the impact on crop production? According to the farmer, changes were gradual during the first year or two; however, as soil quality improved, positive results were observed in crop growth, root development, and overall yield.

Experts also acknowledge that a balanced use of organic and chemical fertilizers helps maintain soil fertility in the long run and improves crop quality.

This technique was applied to various crops, including wheat, paddy, sugarcane, pulses, and vegetables. The farmer notes that tailoring nutrient management to the specific needs of each crop yielded better results.
