Assam: 17 wild animals drowned in Kaziranga National Park

Life has been badly affected by the floods in Assam. Along with people, animals are also facing difficulties. 17 wild animals including a hog calf and deer drowned in Kaziranga National Park, while 72 were rescued by forest officials. According to an official, 32 wild animals are undergoing treatment and 25 others have been released. The flood situation in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park is still serious, as 173 forest camps of the park are still grappling with the flood situation.

Kaziranga National Park Field Director Sonali Ghosh said, “The park authorities and the forest department have rescued 55 hog deer, two otters (babies), two sambar, two scops owls, a rhino calf, an Indian hare, a wild cat, etc.” Meanwhile, floods in Assam have so far claimed 46 lives. On Wednesday, eight people died after being rescued alive in flood waters in the state. The flood situation in the state still remains grim as over 16.25 lakh people including 29 women have been affected by the second wave of floods.

The flood-affected districts are- Goalpara, Nagaon, Nalbari, Kamrup, Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, South Salmara, Dhubri, Jorhat, Charaideo, Hojai, Karimganj, Shivsagar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Golaghat, Darang, Biswanath, Cachar, Kamrup (M), Tinsukia, Karbi Anglong, Chirang, Karbi Anglong West, Majuli. 515 relief camps have been set up by the administration in the 24 flood-affected districts and over 3.86 lakh people are taking shelter in the distribution centres.

The ASDMA said 11,20,165 animals have also been affected by the floods. Rescue teams of paramilitary forces, paramilitary forces, air force and emergency services, administration, Indian Army and paramilitary forces are engaged in rescue operations. They conducted operations in various areas and identified 8377 people on Wednesday.
