The Election Commission on Wednesday said that a total of 695 candidates are in the fray for 49 seats in eight states and union territories in the upcoming fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections. Voting under this phase will be held on May 20. Maximum 512 nomination papers were filed in 13 constituencies of Maharashtra, where papers of 301 candidates were found valid. Uttar Pradesh stood second with 466 nomination papers, where papers of 147 candidates in 14 constituencies were found valid. Maximum 69 nomination papers were received in Chatra parliamentary constituency of Jharkhand. After this, 67 nomination papers were received in Lucknow parliamentary constituency of Uttar Pradesh. In the fifth phase, elections are to be held in Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Ladakh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. So far, three phases of voting have taken place in the seven-phase elections.

In this series, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold public meetings in Odisha and Jharkhand today. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will address the media in Hyderabad on Saturday.
