Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab Resigns From BJD

Cuttack: Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab resigned from the state Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Friday. Mahtab announced about his resignation in a press meet. While speaking to the media person, the Cuttack MP said, “Today, I sent my resignation letter to Biju Janata Dal President at 4 PM. In the letter I have said that with a heavy heart I resign from the Biju Janata Dal with whom I was associated since its inception and I have made some contribution for its development and growth. With this letter, I resign from the primary membership of the Biju Janata Dal.”

“I have requested the party president to accept my resignation,” he added.

When asked about his next course of action, Bhartruhari Mahtab said, “I will take a final decision regarding my political life after having a detailed discussion with my well-wishers and people of my locality.”

Meanwhile, it is speculated that the Parliamentarian resigned from the State ruling party as he was not considered by the party to be fielded in the upcoming election in Odisha.

Bhartruhari Mahtab, the son of former Oidsha CM Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab, was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998 from Cuttack constituency. He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019 from the same constituency.

The Cuttack MP’s resignation comes a day after a special court in Cuttack framed charges against him for allegedly slapping a police officer in 2011.

The special court (MP/MLA) in Cuttack reportedly framed charges against Mahtab under sections 341, 323,294,353,506 of IPC for slapping then ASI (now posted as ACP) Amitabh Mohapatra on January 23, 2011.
