Election Commission directs government to appoint Sanjay Mukherjee as DGP
Kolkata: The Election Commission on Tuesday removed Vivek Sahay as West Bengal Director General of Police, less than 24 hours after nominating him for the post, and directed the state government to appoint Sanjay Mukherjee in his place.
A senior official said Sahay’s appointment was made on the basis of his seniority, but since he was due to retire in the last week of May before the end of the Lok Sabha elections, the poll panel nominated Mukherjee as DGP.
Mukherjee, a 1989 batch IPS officer, was the second person in the list of three officers recommended by the West Bengal government for the post of DGP to the Election Commission.
The poll panel directed the state to ensure immediate compliance and confirm the appointment by 5 pm on Tuesday.
