AINU doctors removed 418 stones from the kidney of a 60 year old man

Hyderabad: Doctors at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) have successfully performed a minimally invasive surgery to remove 418 stones from the kidneys of a 60-year-old patient. The procedure, known as percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), was chosen due to the complexity of the case, as the patient’s kidney function was only 27%. The medical team led by Dr. K. Purna Chandra Reddy, Dr. Gopal R. Tak and Dr. Dinesh M chose PCNL for the removal of stones. PCNL involves small incisions through which specialized instruments, including a miniature camera and laser probe, are used to precisely target and remove the stones. This minimally invasive approach minimizes trauma, speeds recovery, and preserves kidney function. Dr Gopal Tak, consultant urologist at AINU, said that despite having kidney stones for three years, the patient did not show symptoms due to blockage caused by a large stone. The blockage resulted in the formation of several stones, the largest of which was 2 cm in size, which required breaking before removal. The patient, who was admitted to the hospital three weeks ago due to severe vomiting and abdominal pain, was diagnosed with a stone in his left kidney, which required immediate treatment. Dr. Gopal highlighted the causes of kidney stones, which include low water intake, high salt and non-vegetarian food intake and various health conditions like high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, metabolic dysfunction and high uric acid levels. He said that people with kidney stones are at risk of developing stones again and added that precautionary measures like regular check-ups and follow-ups are necessary to maintain kidney health. The doctor warned that cases of kidney stones increase due to dehydration in summer.
