Increase in customer service fraud a matter of great concern: Haryana Police
Saying it is committed to combating cyber crimes, Haryana Police on Saturday said the rise in ‘customer service fraud’ is a matter of concern.
In a statement, the state police urged people to verify the authenticity of any communication asking for personal or financial information.
Police said many persons, looking for customer support numbers through search engines, end up contacting fraudulent numbers.
He said, these fraudsters take advantage of the situation to extract personal and financial information by posing as customer service representatives, causing financial loss to the victims.
“In an era where digital convenience has become an integral part of our daily lives, it has also opened avenues for cyber criminals to exploit citizens,” the police said in a statement.
Haryana Police had earlier highlighted the worrying rise in cyber crime tactics targeting individuals across the state.
“From impersonation scams to fraudulent job offers, the digital domain is full of threats about which the public needs to be aware and cautious,” Haryana Director General of Police Shatrujit Kapoor said in a statement here.
The police also highlighted the menace of online job fraud, where cyber criminals create fake job portals or impersonate officials of well-known companies.
Police said unsuspecting job seekers are lured into sharing sensitive information or transferring money for non-existent job opportunities, registration fees or training programmes.
Police said another method of fraud is the Telegram task scam, where victims receive unsolicited messages offering easy money for simple tasks, after which they find themselves lured into schemes that require financial investment. , which ultimately causes damage, the police said.
“In view of these threats, Haryana Police urges the public to remain alert and cautious,” the police said.
Police said it recommended verifying the authenticity of any communication requesting personal or financial information and refraining from sharing sensitive details through phone calls or unverified websites and applications.

Police encourage anyone who encounters suspicious activities or communications to immediately report it to authorities or the cyber crime helpline number 1930, the police said.
